CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – EPB Fiber Optics is providing only highly energy
efficient, Energy Star certified set-top boxes with their Fi TV
Essential offering. This makes EPB Fiber Optics, along with a satellite
TV provider, one of the only two providers in Chattanooga who offer
Energy Star certified and labeled set-top boxes.
To earn Energy Star certification, a set-top box must be at least 30% more efficient than a traditional set-top box.
“As an electric power distributor, energy efficiency is very important
to us. That’s why we are committed to seeking energy efficient
opportunities in our advanced communications company wherever
possible,” says Katie Espeseth, Vice President of EPB Fiber Optics.
“Having the most energy efficient set-top boxes made a lot of sense.
And it’s just the right thing to do.”
EPB took into consideration several benefits of providing highly energy
efficient set-top boxes to their customers, including research that
showed the following:
• Over three years, Energy Star certified set-top boxes would collectively save EPB’s Fi TV Essential customers over $685,000.
• Each Energy Star certified set-top box consumes 105 fewer kWh per
year than standard set-top boxes, the carbon offset equivalent of each
household with an EPB Fiber Optics set-top box planting approximately
two trees.
• Over three years, EPB Fiber Optics customers will save more than 8
million kWh by using Energy Star certified set-top boxes, offsetting
5.9 metric tons of carbon – the equivalent of taking 1,091 cars off the
road.
