Black History Essay Contest

In celebration of Black History Month and in support of our area schools, we are inviting students to participate in our Sixth Annual Black History Month Essay Contest.

The contest begins Monday, January 11 and ends Monday, February 1, 2010. Entries should be received at EPB no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, February 1, 2010.

Students will be asked to write a 500-1,000 word essay in their own words considering these questions:

Level I (6-7th grade)

Of all the African Americans you know about in history, who is your favorite and why?

Level II (8-9th grade)

African Americans have made tremendous contributions to our society that have influenced how we live, work and play. Select one of these individuals and discuss how their contributions have influenced and/or inspired you.

Level III (10-12th grade)

Read the 1852 Fourth of July Speech that Frederick Douglass gave in Rochester, New York. What were Douglass' key points and why were they relevant at the time?

We encourage area school children in grades 6 through 12 to participate in our annual essay contest. (Click here) for information, including contest entry form, cover sheet, and list of entry requirements.
